Arrival and Dismissal
Our buses will continue to use the front circle for loading and unloading.
Parent Vehicles will enter the back playground in one line and follow the path around the back of the school. Staff will be in the back of the school at the drop-off/pick-up point(s) to assist with unloading and loading. Students have to exit and load on the driver side of the vehicle. After dropping off and picking up, vehicles will continue along the path at the back of the school and exit through the small parking lot and turn right to exit school grounds. Please drive slowly and cautiously as students will be on the sidewalk where vehicles exit.
- Arrival for students being dropped off begins at 8:30 AM once school staff is present. Students are not to be dropped off until the staff begins supervising drop-off. Students are to exit the vehicle ONLY on the driver side once the vehicle has reached the drop off area and staff signals that students may exit. Vehicles will line up and exit the parking lot in one line. Passing other vehicles in the line is strictly prohibited to ensure the safety of everyone. Drop-off ends promptly at 8:40 AM; after that time parents/guardians must park their vehicle in a marked parking spot and escort their child through the parking lot all the way to the entrance. Do not park your vehicle in a “no parking area.” Students are not allowed to be dropped off in the parking lot and walk in unattended.
- Dismissal begins at 3:15 (12:15 on half-days). Vehicles will line up the same way that we line up vehicles in the morning for arrival, but must adhere to the pick-up times below. Do not arrive early because students are on the playground until 3:05 and vehicles will not be permitted to begin lining up until that time. Remain in your vehicles and be prepared for your children to enter the vehicle on the driver side. It is imperative we have your cooperation and you adhere to the procedure.
- We will load as many vehicles as possible, have those vehicles exit SLOWLY, and then move the next set of vehicles forward.
- Our staff may assist with opening doors and making sure your child(ren) get in the vehicle, but you will be responsible for making sure they are safely buckled into their seats.
- We will dismiss 3rd - 5th grade students and their younger siblings (or other students they ride home with) ONLY at 3:16 (12:15 on half-days).
- We will dismiss kindergarten - 2nd grade students at 3:20 (12:20 on half-days).
If you have kindergarten - 2nd grade students without older siblings then your child may not have been dismissed yet. If you are in the line too early, you will be directed to exit and circle back around so we do not hold up the entire line.
Students who are independent walkers or walkers met by an adult will continue to exit through doors near the bike rack. We will not allow any students to walk independently unless we have written permission.
Changes to dismissal should not occur without a note; we understand that emergencies may arise, but repeated changes become disruptive. Written communication regarding changes by email is preferred [email protected] and to the teacher), but a phone call may be made in emergency situations and must be made prior to 12:00. Dismissal is a busy time and changes that occur, especially late in the day, are sometimes difficult to manage and can be confusing for students and staff.
About Us
Oakdale Elementary School opened in 1964. Renovations and additions were completed in 2007. Oakdale School is one of three elementary schools in the Town of Montville. There are 363 students at Oakdale. That number includes our preschool students as Oakdale also hosts the Montville Integrated Preschool for our district. Our primary goal of education is the whole child as seen through our curriculum and activities at Oakdale School. Educational programs are brought into the school, which include Mystic Aquarium and Demos R Us.
There are four school rules: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe, and Build Community.
Staff and students welcome community into the school with volunteer opportunities and the annual Giving Tree. Students give back through an annual nonperishable food drive and have conducted other community care events such as cards sent to military personnel serving overseas, collecting of cold weather essential items, and United Way personal care item drives.
Students are offered a variety of after school activities such as literacy and math clubs and enrichment activities. Each grade level takes a turn hosting a "Town Meeting" that is attended by the entire school. The Oakdale Community Club (The OCC) supports the mission of Oakdale Elementary School and works to involve the students in activities that have a positive impact on the school and the community.
