We are often asked at what age a child should be able to clearly articulate a particular. This Articulation Development Chart should be used as a guideline. Also, overall speech intelligibility follows this "rule of thumb:" 75% understandable to an unfamiliar listener by age 3 and 90% intelligible by age 4. Age 5 and up should have nearly 100% intelligibility even though some sounds may still be distorted and not articulated perfectly.
